As per the request of one of the DanceNet readers, here are copies of the past ramblings of the DanceNet Webmaster.
From the DanceNet editor: I would like to offer my personal thanks to Jody Adams, and to both Anita Canzian and Hillary Ross, for their efforts over the past year. These nice people thought that tango dancing in Boston deserved a better venue than the typical rented hall and created a cozy atmosphere where people could eat, drink, dance tango, and generally hang out in a friendly dance environment. The Boston dance scene has certainly needed that kind of place for dancing, the kind of place to which you could bring a date and actually call it a date. With the amount of free food offered each week and employee overtime, I personally doubt that they *ever* made any money during any week over the past year and this is a testament to their patience, dedication, and generosity to providing the best possible dance environment for the local dancers.Tango Rialto was discontinued after a good run, due to a lack of "support" from the Tango community, and Boston has one less venue for dinner and dancing, . There were just too many people who "had both hands empty" (see the April 22 editorial). The people who urged them to continue the venue on a monthly basis were also the same ones who didn't show up. All of a sudden, they realized that there was one less place where they could go dancing, and a good one, too.
The promoters certainly put in a good effort. Internationally renowned chef Jody Adams put out an awesome spread each week while her partners in crime, Anita and Hillary, were at my house frequently working on the programming so that the dancers would have good music to dance to. The high quality of the programming was noticeable each week. And it was a dance where you *wanted* to dress up for. Visitors from out of town marvelled at the low cost of admission. Now it's gone.
The Blues Jumpers with Haywood Gregory have a new CD out. After hearing it, I think this is BIG news. Why? Because I didn't like the first/other CD that came out years ago and I like this one. The latest lead singer, Haywood Gregory, adds so much energy and soul to the Blues Jumpers' new sound and keeps the music hopping! It's certainly a welcome change and I hope someone brings them back to Boston.
If you've installed Microsoft Windows' Media Player 7, did you notice this little tidbit?
CD ID:I interpret this to mean that if I use Media Player to play a CD on my computer, it will send out the information from that CD to some place on the Internet *unless* I explicitly shut off this feature. It doesn't even tell me where it's sending the information. Note that this is the default setting. When playing an audio CD, Windows Media Player attempts to locate information associated with that CD such as artist name and title of the CD by sending the CD ID to the Internet. You can prevent Windows Media Player from sending the CD ID and locating the information by choosing Work Offline from the File menu.

It doesn't even tell me where it's sending the information, though I suppose that the information can't be all that bad. I wonder if it also sends out information about the computer. Note that this is the default setting. I guess I'll be paying more attention to those notices when I install new programs. When playing an audio CD, Windows Media Player attempts to locate information associated with that CD such as artist name and title of the CD by sending the CD ID to the Internet. By the way, WinAmp does the same thing, but the notice is a bit more obvious. Did anyone check out Real Player?
These days, it's most likely that people ask me for links first because I don't go out of my way to look for other websites anymore. I've reached critical mass where other people's need to be linked is more urgent than my need to populate this website. As it stands now, I have a hard time keeping up with all the information that I get each week.
With that in mind, it becomes disappointing when some webmasters write to me asking for a link to their website but don't bother linking to this one. Now, while I understand that some businesses like a dance studio or band have no need to link to mine (why send customers to other studios or bands?), I don't understand why a social dance club or another information website doesn't automatically link to this website when asking me for a link to theirs. I have a reasonable idea of which links are the one I found and which ones were solicited. I occasionally check through those other websites to make sure my links are correct and up to date, and I'm usually nosey enough to look for a link to this website. I have to wonder why I have to ask for a return link when other webmasters ask for a link to their sites.
